As India grapples with a second COVID-19 wave, infections in the South Asia region have crossed 30 million.
India registered its highest COVID-19 death toll this month since the onset of the pandemic, accounting for more than one-third of the overall numbers. The South Asia region, including India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives and Sri Lanka, is accountable for about 18% of the total cases worldwide and nearly 10% of all fatalities.
As of Friday, India reported around 27.6 million cases and 318,895 fatalities. The country’s daily COVID-19 cases have been falling over the past few days, raising hopes that the second wave in the country is receding... (ET Healthworld – Reuters, May 28, 2021)
